The Spanish Sewing Room
This work is inspired by items found in a wardrobe in the sewing room of an old apartment in Madrid. The piece references the Spanish Civil War and the shadows of Fascism.
A section of the map of Madrid is used as a structure, the grid echoing the warp and weft of fabric.
Using red, yellow, and black, the colours of the Spanish flag, an embellisher is used to fuse fabrics together. The resulting texture shows pockmarks suggesting sites of destruction. Fabrics are layered and frayed, a reference to events that were hidden but now revealed.
